Literature and Society: Marginalized Communities and Expression
Main Article Content
Abstract
The literature of any nation reflects the thoughts, emotions, and collective consciousness of its people. The values, aspirations, concerns, and experiences that shape a society at a particular time are often revealed through its literary works. Literature not only nurtures moral values, inspires patriotism, and enriches human life with hope and enthusiasm, but also gives voice to those who have been marginalized, neglected, or left behind by society.
Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s essay Kavyer Upekshita and Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi’s essay Kaviyon Ki Urmila Vishayak Udasinta (“Poets’ Indifference Toward Urmila”), Maithili Sharan Gupt sought to bring overlooked characters into the literary spotlight. Through his writings, he revived interest in Urmila, a significant yet largely forgotten female character from Indian literary tradition, highlighting her emotions, sacrifices, and individuality.
Similarly, in his work Yashodhara, Gupt focused on the life of Yashodhara, the wife of Gautama Buddha, whose experiences and contributions had often remained overshadowed in literary discourse. By portraying her perspective, he restored recognition to a figure who had long been neglected.
Thus, literature serves not only as a mirror of society but also as a powerful instrument for social awareness and change. By bringing marginalized voices and forgotten identities into public consciousness, literature helps expose social inequalities and guides society toward a more inclusive and enlightened future.
